Earth’s most extraordinary creatures

One of the unusual creatures living in Mexican lakes is the axolotl. It is a larva of several salamander species. The axolotl reaches sexual maturity without undergoing metamorphosis. In the language of the Aztecs, axolotl (or ajolote) literally means “a water toy,” which is an accurate description of its appearance.
